Arthritis is primarily pain in the fingers, knees, elbows, hips, or
any place where there is a joint between bones. It can be excruciatingly
painful and unpredictable especially as there are many nerves around
the joint that are needed to make the complicated joints work properly.
There are many forms of arthritis—Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid
arthritis are just two common ones to mention.
Anyone suffering from arthritis will know how desperate one could
get, to obtain relief. You may feel that you could give all you have to
get that cure coming your way. Your doctor could prescribe medicines
that could bring relief but that could be temporary, have limited
benefits, and sometimes cause unpleasant side effects.
Today many people with arthritis want to try alternate medicines,
natural herbs, and home remedies including dietary supplements to help
ease the pain away. A general view of few remedies in alternate
medicines for arthritis has been given below:
Boswellia - Mainly found in India, this herb has
been used as an anti-inflammatory. Gum extracts of this tree is used to
relieve joint pain and inflammation. It is also effective for ulcerative
colitis (ulcers) formed in the lining of the stomach.
Cherries - A rich source of magnesium (a natural
painkiller) and potassium helps reduce inflammation by ridding tissue of
fluid. Consuming six to eight cherries a day helps keep the pain at
bay.
Dandelion leaves - Rich in Vitamin A and C, when
eaten raw in portions, helps the liver clear toxins out the body. It is
also effective in helping the body repair damaged tissue.
Warm water therapy - The affected regions of the body are immersed in warm water for about an hour or so, thereby effecting relief from pain.
Aloe Vera - This herb is known for its great boost
to energy levels and immune system. It is also known for reducing
inflammation and pain that eventually promotes healing.
Eucalyptus oil - Smearing a thin film of oil on the
affected areas, covering it with a plastic wrap and continuously
applying heat with the help of steaming towels is an age-old traditional
home remedy. This proves to be an effective pain relief routine.
Other herbal medicines that are used to treat arthritis are: oregano,
American ginseng, licorice, rosemary, turmeric, and sesame seeds. Some
of these are used externally and some internally for best results.
Apart from these, other supplements such as glucosamine/chondroitin
sulphate (in right doses), hyaluronic acid (used in beauty treatments),
fatty acid-Cetyl myristoleate (anti-inflammatory and joints lubricant)
may help in relief for those suffering from arthritis.
Adequate exercise, be it water aerobics/ aquatic exercises or gentle
stretching like yoga without placing heavy burden on the joints would be
the ideal way for arthritis sufferers to gain strength and
cardiovascular endurance with further low risk of joint wear and tear.
The benefits of ice and heat on arthritis could also be worthwhile. Ice
is useful for reducing the inflammation and swelling while heat would be
good for relaxing muscles and blood circulation.
Homeopathy has been used worldwide for all forms of arthritis and has
a 200 year history of excellence in safely, energetically treating the
cause, individually for each person and is highly recommended.
Acupuncture is also known to be an effective remedy for arthritis. In
this procedure, fine needles are meticulously inserted at various
points on the skin to reduce the cause of arthritis. According to Dr.
James Mckoy, MD, Chief of rheumatology, Honolulu, “In order to effect a
change in health outcome, patients must change their thoughts,
attitudes, and beliefs.” While many people are under the pretext that
herbal therapy/ aid would not cause them side effects, the irony is that
herbal supplements can be quite powerful and can have strong side
effects. Therefore, before you opt for herbal treatment, it would be
wise to discuss the same with your doctor.
