Addiction is a
condition where a person consumes a substance or engages in a possibly
pleasurable activity; however, it becomes so obsessive that normal activities
and the quality of life take a toll. From smoking to drugs, gambling, sex and
much more, addiction can appear in many forms. According to The National Center
on Addiction and Substance Abuse, 40 million Americans, or one in seven, suffer
some form of addiction.

The key to recovery
The key to
getting over an addiction is with no one other than the patient
herself/himself; there should be an earnest desire to get rid of it, and to escape
from the urges that ruin otherwise a healthy life. Addiction does affect both
the body and the mind. The mere desire to escape is often not enough to enable
the patient win the battle.
Medical
treatments can provide support that indicates a far greater chance of ridding
of the debilitating condition, and returning to normal life. Traditional
medicine offers a variety of treatments for addiction. These range from
nicotine patches (that stop the urge to smoke), to medications (that help in
the withdrawal from drugs) to psychological counseling (that resists the urge
to indulge in unhealthy activities) and more.
The problem with
medications is that they often become crutches on which the patient becomes
dependent, which in turn lead to a different form of addiction. Another
undesirable aspect of medications is that they may have side effects, which
cause additional problems and complications.
Homeopathy: safe and effective option
Traditional
medicine uses the ’one-size-fits-all’ principle of treatment. For example, a
habitual smoker takes nicotine patches or chewing gum to fight off the desire
for nicotine, and thus overcome the addiction. However, the root cause and the
effect of patient-specific physical and mental conditions often remain unaddressed.
This makes de-addiction much more difficult and opens the door for bouts of worrisome
recurrence of the problem.
Homeopathy, as a system of
medicine, works on four basic concepts:
- According to the principle of ‘like cures like’, similar medicine can cure a disease that causes similar symptoms in healthy people.
- The ’law of minimum doses’ states that the most effective treatment of an illness would be to administer low doses; minimum doses encourage the body to respond naturally to the disease, using its internal strengths.
- A case is different from every other, and a holistic view of the individual is essential to finding the most effective form of treatment.
- Best remedies are derived from natural sources like minerals and plants.
Homeopathy has
been a trusted system of treatment for all kinds of addiction for over two
centuries. It works by:
- Detoxing the body by using diluted remedies for the drug of abuse
- Treating the symptoms presented
- Treating the overall constitution of the patient to address any excesses or deficiencies that may be the underlying cause of the addiction
- Ensuring the patient of a lasting solution
