Respecting your Body with Homeopathy

The word homeopathy is coined by fusing together two Greek words – Hamios, which means ‘similar’, and Phalos, which means ‘suffering’. In his highly celebrated book The Wisdom of the Body, Dr. Walter B. Cannon clearly outlined the signification of “similar suffering” and its high effectiveness in curing diseases.

The wisdom of the body

Conventional medicine treats symptoms only as signs that indicate some health problems in the body. For example, a runny nose indicates cold. However, it is more than that: it is an effort by the body to flush out the toxins that have caused the sickness.

Conventional medicine prescribes drugs to stop or suppress these symptoms, thereby reducing body’s ability to fight the sickness. In the case of a cold, runny nose maybe stopped, but the underlying sickness remains. The drug triggers side effects such as nasal congestion, headache, fatigue etc., which can worsen the overall physical condition.

Over millennia, the human body has fine-tuned its adaptation to the surrounding environment. As the body has evolved down the centuries, so too have the symptoms associated with various diseases. Quite unconsciously, with its sophisticated systems, the body can react to any invasion that causes distress. Every symptom is an effort by the body to use its natural resources to ward off an illness.

Homeopathic remedies do not ever attempt to suppress or remove the symptoms to provide a temporary but false sense of relief. Instead, they act to support and enhance the body’s natural ability to fight illnesses. Homeopathic medication enhances the symptoms and thereby increases the body’s own abilities to heal it. This is what “similar suffering” means.

The principle of “similar suffering” or “treating like with like” is the foundation of some of the most effective of conventional medical treatments – immunizations and allergy treatments. In both cases, a weakened form of the causes of the sickness is introduced into the body. It stimulates the body’s own responses and strengthens its ability to fight the sickness, should it occur.

The effectiveness of homeopathy lies in its proven efficiency in providing the body with an increased ability to fight disease and recover quickly. Because the process is  natural, there are no dangerous side effects. Thus the focus is always on the wisdom of the body.

Choosing the right doctor

Homeopathy is not really “alternative medicine” in the generally accepted use of the term. This science of medicine has evolved over a long period. Millions of people the world over have complete faith in its efficacy. This faith stems from the satisfying treatments they have received and the cures they have experienced first-hand.

Homeopathy rests on an exhaustive understanding of the human body, the condition of each patient, and the patient-specific combination of medicines that will provide the cure required. As with any school of medicine and medical treatment, finding the right doctor is a key factor in the cure.

Obviously, vast and deep medical knowledge of the doctor is crucial. Equally important is the empathy that the doctor has for the patient. The positive psychological effect of ‘safe’ regimen prescribed by a ‘trusted’ doctor with high reputation plays a major role in speeding up the recovery.
