Common Skin Conditions and Homeopathy

The foundation of homeopathy is the Law of Similars. This means that a substance which when introduced into a healthy individual produces certain symptoms; the same substance when introduced into an individual afflicted with the very same symptoms cures him. Homeopathy uses only a minuscule quantity of a substance for treatment. It is more about strengthening the body’s immune system to fight diseases.

Skin diseases respond well to homeopathic treatment. This is because homeopathy does not isolate the problem from the individual. It is a very comprehensive form of treatment which takes into account the mental and emotional state of a person as well. As skin diseases are often triggered or worsened by stress and anxiety, a homeopathic physician will prescribe a remedy taking all this into account.

Here are a few common skin ailments which can be treated effectively with homeopathy :

  • Acne: This is not only one of the most common skin ailments but also the bane of adolescents. Acne can come in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, etc. It is caused by the blockage of the skin pores with excessive sebum but it is also affected by conditions like PCOD, pregnancy, puberty, hyperthyroidism, etc. Hence homeopathy which treats acne by taking all the causes into consideration works very well. Possible treatment might include Hepar sulph, Calcarea, kali bromatum, pulsatilla, silica, sulphur, etc.
  • Eczema: This is another common skin condition which usually affects children and can be successfully treated with homeopathy. People affected with eczema usually have a family history of it. In eczema, itchy rashes occur, usually on the arms and behind the knees. Hormonal variations, use of certain soaps and detergents, certain foodstuff, environmental conditions like extreme heat or cold and stress all play a role in the severity of eczema. A number of studies have been conducted and all concur that homeopathy is more effective that conventional medicine when it comes to the treatment of eczema in the long run. The homeopathic treatment uses sulphur, natrum muriaticum, Arsenicum album, pulsatilla, etc. to treat eczema depending on the symptoms and the cause.
  • Psoriasis: This is another skin condition that can be treated with homeopathy. People suffering from this usually develop scaly or inflamed patches on the skin. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease and there are different types of it: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, erythrodermic and psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis is often triggered by streptococcal throat infections, certain medication, and skin injury as well as mental conditions like stress, shock, and grief. Though conventional treatment does help in treating psoriasis, its effect is temporary. Conventional treatment also uses steroid creams, the usage of which can be completely avoided with homeopathy. Homeopathy takes into account the location of the itchy/scaly patches along with the triggering factors while treating psoriasis. The medication prescribed depending on this could be natrum muriaticum, graphites, phosphorous, Arsenicum album, Arsenicum iodatum, etc.
